How to Play Kakuro

To solve a Kakuro, fill in the empty cells with single digits from 1 to 9 so that each vertical and horizontal block adds up to the totals given. Each individual digit can only be used once in each block.

Use the mouse to click up (or down) through the numbers 1 to 9 in each square. The small black arrows on each side of the square tell you whether you are counting from 1 up to 9 (right arrow) or from 9 down to 1 (left arrow).

Using your keyboard, you can type in up to eight practice numbers above the line at the top of each box.

When you have correctly completed a block it fills with colour and any practice numbers will disappear.

Kakuro puzzles were first published in America by Dell Magazines with the original name of “Cross Sums”. Just like Sudoku, these puzzles quickly became very popular in Japan where they were renamed Kakuro by publishing house Nikoli.

Kakuro can be considered a type of crossword where the clues appear as sum totals and the answers are a sequence of numbers. When added together, the numbers match the given totals.

Scientific studies have recently shown that the focused mental activity used to solve puzzles like Kakuro can help prevent memory loss and degenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s – another reason to get your daily dose of puzzling fun!

The Kakuro online puzzles featured on YouPlay are presented by Lovatts Publications, leaders in the industry for over 25 years. With a reputation for exceptional quality, Lovatts Kakuro online will provide you with hours of brain-teasing entertainment.

YouPlay Kakuro Tips

1. If you have two numbers in a Kakuro clue box, the one in the upper right corner is your clue for the boxes to the side of it. The number in the bottom left corner is your clue for the numbers below it.

2. The best way to begin a Kakuro puzzle is to write down every number that could possibly appear in each cell. YouPlay Kakuro puzzles have a space at the top of each cell where you can type up to eight practice numbers that could be correct.

3. Become familiar with ‘Kakuro blocks’ (see below). These will help you correctly identify possible combinations.

This table gives you all the Kakuro blocks between 2 and 8 cells in length.
