The Zen of Quadra

By Miranda

There are many puzzles and games on the YP site and the experience of playing each one is quite different.

Do you dive into Quadra, trying to reveal the rings on every square in the puzzle as quickly as possible? Or do you try to extend the game, finding the greatest number of squares you can transform in each turn, so as to achieve the highest possible score. Do you achieve a 'Zen' state, at one with the board, seeing all the patterns as they emerge with each transformation and choosing each action in harmony with these changes?

Why do I ask? Well, YP's Quadra seems to be a game that challenges players as there is no single path to success. Yes, the aim of the game is the completed state, that is, with all squares having their rings revealed. But there are many ways to achieve this, quickly or slowly, with an eye on the timer or with a view to the points scored, or a combination of both.

It's frustrating to some players since, as there are so many paths to 'completion' and as different rewards are sought by each player, it can be difficult to 'win'. The game allows you to define for yourself what 'winning' is, but makes it harder to compare results from player to player or even from one play of your own to the next.

You can tell a lot about yourself, or merely what mood you are in, by examining what you want from your favourite game. Does a high score reward you? Do you derive pleasure from simply finishing a puzzle or game? Do you need to achieve a place on the leaderboard? What gives you joy when you play your pet puzzle?

I love the experience of the solving a cryptic clue, and the pleasure derives both from teasing out the meaning and from wonder at the creativity of those who create the clues.

What's your particular puzzle pleasure?
