Trivia Teaser

In which American state would you find Tombstone, the site of the 'Gunfight At OK Corral'?

You'll have noticed that there are lots of trivia games on YouPlay - or, if you haven't, do take yourself to the Online Trivia or Brainteasers & More and explore, you'll enjoy them. And if you have already played these games, I'd be interested to know which ones you prefer, and why.

The Quizzard spends his life magically transforming facts into fun, no trivial task, believe me. And even more time addressing queries that arise from the trivia questions.

Which brings me to a question about cocktails that was a constant puzzle for trivia addicts.

It arose when the Quizzard asked which of four options was NOT a mixed drink and one of the options was a Molotov cocktail.

Of course, we all know that a Molotov cocktail is an improvised petrol bomb, named by the Finns after the Soviet foreign minister at the time of Finland's Winter War. They also named the bombing raids 'Molotov bread baskets' in mordant reference to Soviet propaganda describing them as humanitarian missions.

But, alas for the knowledgeable, there's also an incendiary, and possibly delicious, mixture of vodka and rum that goes by the same name.

So 'Molotov cocktail' was not the right answer, and that puzzled many.

What surprises me is the inventiveness of those behind the bar creating extraordinary combinations and then giving them exquisitely whimsical names.

The Grasshopper, the Sidecar, the White Lady, the Kamikaze (that one's a little more obvious as a warning, at least) are great, and why is a mixture of brandy or bourbon with ginger ale called a Horse's Neck?

And from the Horse's Neck, we could move to that other whimsical realm, that of naming  race horses. I have a soft spot for the (possibly apocryphal) 'Redundantredundant'...

What's your favourite?
