Happy New Year!

By Miranda

Of course, now we have to cope with the consequences of the annual pig-out which is Christmas, followed by the annual alcohol excess of New Year (unless you had the sense to go to an alcohol-free family zone from which to watch the amazing fireworks*).

So to assist us in motivation for exercise and healthy eating, I remind you of a recent addition to the dictionaries, the FOOD BABY. Yes, this revolting term describes the abdominal bump, not dissimilar to that of early pregnancy, which is the result solely of overindulgence. I loathe the term, which is good as I intend to use it as a mantra on the treadmill and the step machine... which may work if I actually get to the gym.

Unsurprisingly a spot of gardening is also an effective counter to flab. A few hours of digging, carting away fallen fruit (yes, and bagging it so that we don't provide a haven for fruit fly) and re-mulching beds seems to work a treat.

Also the rainforest plum is fruiting abundantly this year. I have made glace plums, plum jam and plum jelly and I'm now at the point of simply accumulating the fruit and the balance will end up as plum paste (when I've got a free day to stand over the pan). Shouldn't complain, the native rainforest plum (also called the Davidsons plum) is too sour to eat from the tree but it makes the most amazing sauces, condiments and preserves.

But the world of gardening doesn't seem to have added many words to our dictionaries recently. I did find POLYTUNNEL, but that's more industrial than domestic in scale. Perhaps it's because gardening has been around so long that there's already a term for everything and just about every technique has been done before... somewhere.

What's your pet gardening term?

* The fireworks are worldwide, I'm not sure about the alcohol-free zones for family viewing.

Mmmm, well maybe if you separate the word into letters and dashes it'll get through Java - we're all terrific spellers here!

Go ahead Pammy. You test it... you'll need to use a REALLY rude word to be sure... Lol

So much to do, so little time in which not to do it.

My mantra, 'don't do today what you can do tomorrow' has served me well. Sometimes, by tomorrow, you don't need to do it! ;-)

Today, being yesterday's tomorrow, is your day to add another item to your backlog dingdong belle.
