Faberge Egg Faberge Eggs

Faberge eggs were created by the Russian jewellery firm House of Faberge between 1885 and 1917. The beautiful jewelled eggs were crafted from precious metals, gems and enamel and are universally regarded as masterpieces.

Each egg has a theme and some contain  a hidden ‘surprise’, revealed when the two halves of the egg are unfastened. These treasures are nestled inside the eggs and often take the form of exquisite keepsakes, trinkets and jewellery.

The first large Faberge egg was commissioned by Tsar Alexander III as a gift for his wife, the Empress Maria Fedorovna. Known as the Hen egg, it was crafted from gold, rubies and white vitreous enamel, and concealed a gold hen nestled within a yellow yolk. The hen could also be opened to reveal a diamond and gold crown which contained a ruby pendant (sadly now lost).

Other famous Faberge eggs include the Pelican (1898), which contained eight miniature watercolours. Each miniature was painted on ivory, framed with pearls and depicted a different charitable institution – all of which received the patronage of the Dowager Empress of Russia. The Winter egg concealed a flower basket studded with 1378 diamonds and the Peter the Great egg, which celebrated the two-hundredth anniversary of St. Petersburg in 1703, contained a miniature gold replica of the Peter the Great equestrian statue.

Only fifty large Faberge eggs were made under the direction of Peter Carl Faberge, the majority for the Russian Imperial Family. Other notable recipients included the Duchess of Marlborough, the Rothschilds, the Nobels and a series of seven eggs was made for Russian industrialist Alexander Kelch. No eggs were made in 1904 and 1905 because of the Russo – Japanese War.

After the Russian revolution in 1917, the Romanov palaces were ransacked and the Faberge family fled to Switzerland. Stalin declared the eggs to be symbolic of gross imperial excess and sold many to acquire more foreign currency. Today the iconic Faberge eggs can be found in museums and private collections around the world, although eight of the large eggs and many of the hidden secrets are considered lost.

What would you hide in a Faberge Easter egg?
