Be My Valentine

By Jessie

A perfectly made cup of tea, vintage jewellery, afternoon thunderstorms, sourdough toast with marmalade, making up silly songs with my son, embroidery, apricots, old churches, dusk, books, Bollywood, roses, Scrabble, Japan, sausage sandwiches, geckos, Marlborough sauvignon blanc, making lists, coloured pencils, peppermint choc chip ice cream, ferry trips, glossy magazines, chillis, magnolias, words, picnics, pearls, mix tapes, cooking shows, the beach, dumplings… oh hello you. With the 14th Feb upon us again, I was just pondering over some of the things I love to do, to eat, to watch, to make…

I’ve blogged before about how I’m not a fan of the cheesy queasy commercial V. Day nonsense (wilting roses, nauseating “I wuv you” teddy bears and the same old boring chocolates), but I thought I could at least get into the spirit by spending the day doing something I really DO love. After all, the idea of spreading love vibes for a whole day is quite good I think. So on Tuesday, instead of suffering through an over-priced set-menu in an over-booked restaurant I shall be hunting geckos, sipping wine from my goblet and wearing nothing but pearls [“cough” – YP Boss]. Lovely indeed!

Share the love – and WIN a Lovatts mag (or possibly TWO!)

Want to win one of 40 Lovatts puzzle magazines? Of course you do!

Simply post a comment on this blog describing either:

a) The moment you knew you were in love - with your spouse, your child, your pet, your boss, your hairdresser, a stranger on the bus… I'm not here to judge! Pretend you’re on the couch with Oprah (don't worry, Dr. Phil isn't here).

b) A list of things YOU love, kinda like mine. What do you love to watch? To eat? To write? To do? To dream? To drink? To make? That kind of thing…

(Please try to keep posts under about 150 words!)

40 winners will be selected AT RANDOM to win a current copy of either Lovatts BIG Crosswords or Variety Prize Puzzles . Premium Members who are selected for a prize will win BOTH.

The Rules…

1. Promotion opens Friday 10th Feb 2012 at 4.30 pm and closes Wednesday 15th Feb at 10.00 am (AEDST)

2. 40 winners will be selected using a Random Number Generator (approved x). Winners who hold a free account will win a copy of either BIG Crosswords or Variety Puzzles. Winners who are Premium Members (YouPlay subscribers) will win both titles.

3. Free members selected as winners who choose to upgrade their accounts by 11am on Friday 17th February (AEDST) will also receive both magazine titles.

4. You must be logged into your YouPlay account to post a blog comment. It is the judges' right to remove any comments that contravene YouPlay's Communications Policy - please be nice!

5. You can post multiple times, and answer both questions if you like, but only your first comment will be included into the draw.

6. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The moment I knew I was in love with my pet rat Angus was when, while he was wandering around on the kitchen table he walked past my hand - I touched his tail and he briefly curled it around my wrist (said to be a sign of affection with rats). I just melted! :)

I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains. I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror The wide brown land for me! As I am now living abroad in a third world country....I really miss my homeland ‘Australia’. Just like the author of ‘"My Country" Dorothea Mackellar who wrote this iconic patriotic poem back in the early 1900's about Australia when she was homesick.

I am in love with the sky! Flying in it, watching it - the changing vista of clouds - so many different shapes and colours. Flying as an Ansett air hostess in the 60s, then learning to fly light aircraft in the 70s; taking family and friends for a flight, and watching them go from scared to fascinated and enthusiastic. The view from the air - sparkling sea, fields of different colours, the red earth of the outback, and that wonderful feeling of being above it all. After 7 years as flight crew in nine different types of airliner, and 200 hours of flying myself, the sky is a part of my life that I love.

As a pregnant, first time mother I was worried. I'd never been a "baby person" . I'm still not. However, seconds after birth, when my daughter was laid on my chest, she seemed to instantly recognise my voice. She quietened and nestled in. It was love at first cuddle! I'm still amazed at how quickly it happened.

I was with my boys at a garage sale run by a church. There was a gentleman there with a box of kittens his purebred Siamese had presented him with (father unknown) I looked into the box and a pair of sky blue eyes melted my heart. That beautiful kitten became an integral part of our family from that day forward. I still melt at the memory of those eyes.

I really love it when Hubby and I visit the local seafood market and pick up fresh prawns, oysters and maybe a couple of sand crabs to take home and enjoy with a great glass of chardonnay. Also find the aroma of freshly ground coffee irresistable. Wishing all a Happy Valentine`s Day.

Having started on home dialysis, it is all the "little" things my husband does for me that make me realise that I am truely blessed & that real love is a gift to be cherished. To my man- thank you honey, you are the best.

I love it when my hubby calls in to my work unexpectedly and brightens my day, when my son makes a random wisecrack that make me laugh, my daughter when she makes me a lovely and thoughtful card and our dog who always comes and sits on my foot!! Happy Valentines all. :)

I loved Australia the minute I arrived at Bonegilla, the migrant camp, with the smell of eucalyptus trees, the possums and the koalas. They are my anchor to a wonderful moment in time.

I fell in love with my kelpie Sheena, as her mother gave birth to her. All black or tan pups, the runt was a RED Kelpie, like her mum. As she got a few days old, Roxie would allow me the previlege of holding ONLY her. Naturally, she stayed, the rest went.

On this day of all days I have many great memories of how I met my soul-mate. You see, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU is "our song". It merged us into one person, inseparable and taken to spiritual levels that we still experience today 16 years on. RIP Whitney Houston. At first though, we were enemies, total opposites, until one day I was waiting for a date and hubby saw me, (waiting, waiting, waiting) felt sorry for me and asked me to go for a walk. We did, a long, companionable stroll. We met a bandicoot in a park at night who brought us together as we laughed at his peculiar antics. We bless that funny bandicoot every precious day we share together. He makes me love life and everything in it.

Although I don't remember it, I'm told I bit my husband on the ankle (both of us tots, both handed over to the same kindly woman, who was babysitting us) and left my mark. And that, apparently, was "the moment". Lucky man :D.

Falling in love with Australia took a few years but now it happens again every time I come back from a visit 'home.' The sun and the smell of the gum trees.

I love My beloved hubby, age 60, was laid off last year. He's worked hard, he's tired, and we shouldn't be spending money. It was too late to write him a love sonnet, I already did that one year, and I think I only had one in me. I searched craig's list and found an espresso machine for $5, my kind of price. He is truly overjoyed with his Valentine's day present and says it brings back the very best of work, without the headaches.

I love the pink hearts as a backdrop for Valentine's Day. Cool! I love looking into my nephew's gorgeous blue eyes, I love the look in my cat's eyes when he miaows his presence. I love nature -the ocean, trees, rainbows, forests, mountains, sunsets(I could go on and on). I love wildlife. I love that people care for their animals. As the lyrics say in one of Jewel's songs, "In the end only kindness matters". I love that sentence because it is so true. The simple things are always the things that touch the heart the deepest. Laughing with my nephews is also high on my list.
