What are the odds of throwing double six in dice-throwing?
Fantasy Olympics
by Jessie, 20-8-2008
We’re all familiar with high-profile Olympic sports like swimming, gymnastics and athletics, but did you know there are many (somewhat surprising) sports and disciplines not contested in the Games that are nevertheless recognised as Olympic Sports by the IOC? These include:
- Boules
- Billiards
- Competitive ballroom dancing
- Sumo wrestling
- Bridge
- Chess
- Orienteering
- Surfing
- Tug of war (!)
Recognised sports that are not part of an Olympic Games competition schedule often become represented at the World Games.
There are also some sports and disciplines that have been demonstrated at various Summer Olympic Games, but for one reason or another have never been included on the Official Games Program. These include:
- Ballooning
- Bowling
- Gliding
- Surf lifesaving
- Motorsports
- Roller hockey
Personally, I think the sooner the IOC promotes the glorious sport of ballooning to its rightful inclusion within the Official Games Program the better. And why stop there? I can think of many other disciplines worthy of inclusion (well, more worthy than Roller hockey anyway). How about Stunt kite flying? Or Skittles? Pinball? Darts? What about crossword solving – after all, they allow Chess!
What “sports” would you like to see included in the Olympic Games? Enter this week’s poll, and then discuss your decision on the Olympics forum.
