It’s interesting to note that the different accents of English-speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and North America vary because of the part of the British Isles that the majority of settlers came from.

The broad Australian accent is very similar to Cockney pronunciation of the 18th C, which is not surprising considering the many Cockney convicts that were transported here. Irish emigrants also had an influence on the accent.

The first English speakers to live in New Zealand were Australian sealers and loggers, followed by Scottish emigrants, which explains the difference in vowel pronunciation – that was the Scottish influence.

Similarly, the American accent was strongly influenced by the many Irish settlers there, and the Canadian accent was based on the American one but affected by the Scottish settlers that came to Canada.

This is a simplification because there have been other influences in all of these examples, including the indigenous speech of Aborigines, Maori and native American Indians as well as settlers from many other parts of the world.

An Australian soldier who was asked by an English officer on the battlefield “Have you come here to die?” replied “No, I came here yesterday”.
That speech sound “die" for “day” is also heard in Cockney accents. The practice of saying "mate" to a friend or even a stranger is one that may have been introduced to Australia by settlers from the East End, all those years ago.

Happy puzzling!

Ian the solution is to leave them all 33% and leave the rest to the charity of your choice, of course if the charity of your choice is me, leave them each 1%. Lol

Yes that is a good idea, we'll see next time we redo our wills; as two families and a lot of money is involved it could get quite messy and we have put the oh ive forgotten what they are called too, the {Public Trustee) they are the executors. Rgds Ian

Okay, I'm back. No lunch, no promotion, no raise. Because I told the Area Manager I'm leaving after Xmas, it's policy to interview outgoing management as to why. :))

LOL you can tell the 'uglies' on the blog. They're the ones who agree an attractive package is not important... But surely what's on the inside glows on the outside... :)) A mean, bitter heart makes a very ugly face. LOL LOL

No NBN yet here Pete. It seems to have arrived in my daughter's Townsville suburb but she still uses Telstra. Also, the optical cable isn't actually coming to people's homes in most cases so it won't be as fast as it could be. It will probably improve things for many people though. Our Telstra broadband is pretty good here so we are lucky. We can't get Optus broadband, doesn't come to this area.

As regards the technical comments: the site has been partly down all day (couldn't play games I usually play. I'm in Canada where hackers have twice shut down the gov't security site (CSIS) in last 24 hours. Also my bank was offline. I wonder if there is a connection (no pun intended) between these things?
