For years, our readers have been telling us that crosswords keep their minds healthy and often refer to our puzzles as brain food. As surprising as it may be, scientists around the world are also advocating the humble crossword as a way of exercising the mind and in so doing, extending the average person's lifespan.

The regular mental activity involved in solving a crossword causes a hormone called serotonin to be released into the body, enabling the body to better cope with stress and thereby repel life-threatening occurrences such as stroke and heart attack.

The mental stimulation also improves the brain's problem-solving capabilities, warding off degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia, and helping to rehabilitate the brain in its recovery from stroke and other debilitating illnesses.

If any of you puzzlers have stories about how your health has been affected by solving puzzles, I'd love to hear from you.
